Stained Glass Laboratory
[OpenClose]

Started as an experiment in 2004 with the passing of time has been of great interest for the young
students, fascinated and seduced by infinite possibilities of transformation and utilization of glass.
Today it can boast a considerable development and different realizations.
The course offers a complete base formation in the artistic and crafts field of glass. It includes,
besides a view of the story of glass and glass art, the learning of the most common techniques of glass working, reproducible in a formative context, which means to realize, as far as possible, a real crafts shop.

The laboratory disposes of grinders, welding-machines and various utensils (pliers, kits for gluing the glass with uva rays, kits for cold painting on glass).

The students are asked to face and solve the problems relative to the making of various things – as if they had been commissioned – with particular interest towards the technical aspects, the economic availability and economy of the materials and to the organization of the working times.

Guided visits to the craft shops and museums are organized during the course, to amplify the knowhow of the students of the productive world and to stimulate the cultural, artistic and aesthetic sensibility.

The bread making School

The bread making School of Città dei ragazzi, finished in April 2009, is born with the aim of forming new workers to satisfy the lack of qualified labour in the pizzeria/bread making sector and to guarantee the continuous formation of these workers, who need a continuous updating on the various types of oven products.

It starts with a protocol Agreement between the Opera Nazionale per le Città dei ragazzi (ONCR) and the Association of Bread Makers of Rome and province (a category association started in 1944, who adheres to CAN). The School has a surface of more than 100 square meters and has a classroom for theory and a laboratory, furnished with very modern equipment (flaking machine, forming machine, refrigerators, leavening cells, breaking machine, kneading machine, a two rooms electric oven, working surfaces).

The realization of the School is part of a vast program of potentiation of the inside formative offer of the ONCR, which aims at realizing in time a series of laboratories and professional courses, finalized at the transmission of operative know how, tied to the Italian crafts tradition, financed by the benefactors, category associations, public and private institutions.

I will tell you how the bread making school started
I met Marco Giovannini for the first time on the 15th of May 2008 during a round-table conference on the social-working integration of foreign minors, held in the Assembly of the Città dei Ragazzi. He had come to know about Città dei Ragazzi reading the book by Eraldo Affinati and it was he who gave him the first information. After a first exchange of points of view, and being a practical person, he immediately asked me how he could help our boys to become part of the working world. During the following days he gave me names and firms to contact from his agenda. His work is in the nautical field. His firm produces sanitary fittings for boats with a very accurate and innovative design. Giovannini is a real artisan and has the cult of a job well done. Another of his qualities is without doubt the attention he gives to the persons he meets, especially if needy.
We spent together a brief summer vacation in Basilicata in 2008 and during a walk in the mountains I talked to him about our project to build a bread/pizza making School to give our boys a job. This initiative started in 2004 with the Association of the Bread makers of Rome and Province, and could not begin because of the considerable resources needed. Those were difficult years for Città dei Ragazzi with many other priorities that had to be solved to guarantee to the boys new living accomodations. The idea of the school interested Marco, and during the Autumn of 2008 he started to follow it as a daily engagement. After various studies and consultations, he let me know that he wanted to take care of the school personally, and hand it to us already finished. That was it. In February 2009 the work began, and in May of the same year the first pizza making course started. Up to now about 90 youngsters learned to make pizza and bread and, of these, a good number of them works. Marco Giovannini is always more involved in various ways in the life of Città dei Ragazzi and the needs of the young guests. I’m sure that he will soon want to dedicate his time to a new initiative.
